My Nurse Coach Journey

Updated: Sep 16, 2023

Do you feel exhausted all the time, like you're giving away your time, energy and spark to everyone around you?

When I turned 55 years old, I was in the middle of the sandwich generation taking care of everyone else around me; teens, parents, friends, family, my patients and even pets! I was at the highest weight of my life, in stress and in pounds- I was even heavier than I was when I was pregnant! I felt exhausted, stressed, and never had a minute to myself! I lost my energy and spark. My health was a mess. I didn't even want to have a checkup! I was stress eating. I was not making time to exercise. No matter what I tried, I felt like I couldn't dig out of the holes of bad habits I was in. I wanted to feel better, to care for my own body and soul, and have more energy. But when I started, it only lasted a few weeks or even days! I was stuck.

I went to the Holistic Nurse website looking for ideas and discovered a Nurse Coaching program. I signed up for way more than I thought. Not only did I learn about helping other people through Nurse Coaching, but an important part of the program was to learn to take care of ourselves to serve from a place of wellness and joy. This gave me a safe space to learn to accept myself right where I was and to start with tiny steps that worked for me. I was finally able to get unstuck. "Action over Perfection" is what I keep telling myself. I started to make better food choices to help my body feel better. I started exercising in ways I enjoy and lost weight. More importantly, I lost the guilt about caring for myself before everyone else!

I am grateful for the little things and do my best, not perfect, but the best I can, to care for myself and others. I enjoy walking. I'm on a mission to hike the Appalachian Trail in stages each year, even if it's one mile at a time! I enjoy eating a more plant-based diet, which has helped cut my cravings. My boundaries are better than they used to be. I've learned it's okay to say "No". It's better to be honest with myself and others so I can serve from a place of joy.
